A glimpse into Kent's Educational Psychology Service

An older woman sits down next to a child sitting at a desk to help them with their work. They are both smiling and wearing green.

You might have come into contact with Kent Educational Psychology Service (KEPS) if your child has had an educational, health and care (EHC) needs assessment, where they carry out assessments and consultations of your child's education needs.

However, they also provide a range of different types of support to students, their parents and schools across Kent.

Here's a glimpse into some of their activities:

  • They run a range of programmes to support children and young people, including a Cognitive Behavioural Approach programme for children at risk of Emotionally Based School Avoidance
  • They have run workshops for school staff covering essential topics like Precision Teaching, Emotion Coaching, Emotional Literacy, and Trauma-Informed Practice.
  • They offer support and information sessions for parents, carers, and the community on various needs, providing valuable insights and practical strategies to help families navigate challenges including emotionally based school avoidance, ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and functional neurological disorder (FND).
  • Providing specialist support to schools taking part in the PINS project, a collaborative effort by NHS Kent and Medway, KCC, and Kent PACT, to provide extra support for school in developing staff skills and knowledge, support families and improve experiences for neurodiverse pupils in school.

Spotlight on Dartford and Gravesham

"One particular activity that deserves a special mention is the outstanding work that the Dartford and Gravesham KEPS team have done in addressing social, emotional, and mental health challenges in schools" explained Christine McInnes, Director of Education and SEND for KCC.

"In January, the KEPS team hosted their first conference for this initiative, welcoming more than 100 senior leaders from local schools. The event focused on exploring tools to support students to communicate and interact with others in a way that embodies core values such as respect, inclusiveness, honesty compassion, cooperation and humility." .

Following the success of this conference, the team will work closely with schools to integrate these skills into everyday practice.
