Holocaust Memorial Day in 2025 marked the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenhau, the largest Nazi death camp, on 27 January 1945. This year the theme of the anniversary was Fragility of Freedom.
Millions of Jews and other minorities were killed in concentration camps in the Second World War by the Nazis and their collaborators.
Across the UK and the world people were encouraged to reflect on and remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, as well as countless others who were killed under Nazi persecution and in subsequent genocides worldwide.
Chairman of Kent County Council, Bryan Sweetland, who arranged for County Hall to be lit in purple light to commemorate the day, said: "This 80th anniversary of the unimaginable atrocities of the holocaust is perhaps the last milestone year that will remain in living memory.
“That is why it is more important than ever before, as survivors get older and fewer, to remember and reflect on the horrors of the Holocaust.
“The stories we all heard in the commemoration ceremonies across the world were of courage, suffering and survival.
“ We must never allow the painful experiences of so many to be forgotten.”
