Consultation opens on KCC’s gypsy and traveller sites’ pitches policy

Plans to ensure that gypsy and traveller pitches operated by Kent County Council (KCC) continue to be allocated fairly are being proposed in a public consultation launched today (Wednesday 4 February 2026).

KCC is proposing updates to its pitch allocation policy so that decisions across the council’s seven owned and managed, sites are made in a clear, consistent and transparent way.

The revised policy would only apply to new applicants. Existing residents would not be affected unless they are looking to transfer between our sites or are a young person currently living on a site with a parent or guardian who may wish to apply for their own pitch once they turn 18.

Key changes focus on improving clarity for applicants and strengthening the checks carried out before pitches are offered. The aim is to support the effective management of sites and ensure they remain safe, well-run communities.

The updated policy, if approved, will also include a clearer list of exclusion criteria to help KCC maintain high standards across its sites.

These proposals relate only to the seven gypsy and traveller sites operated directly by KCC. They do not apply to the eight sites run by other district and borough councils in Kent.

The consultation runs from today until Monday 30 March 2026. Several drop-in events have been arranged where members of KCC’s GRT Resident Service will be available to answer questions. These are as follows:

  • Saturday 14 February, 10am to 12pm - Kent History and Library Centre (James Whatman Way, Maidstone ME14 1LQ)
  • Thursday 26 February, 10am to 12pm - Sevenoaks Library (Buckhurst Lane, Sevenoaks TN13 1LQ)
  • Friday 6 March, 3pm to 5pm - Dover Library (Dover Discovery Centre, Market Square, Dover CT16 1PH)
  • Tuesday 17 March, 12pm to 2pm - Canterbury Library in the Beaney (The Beaney House of Art & Knowledge, 18 High Street, Canterbury CT1 2RA)

Anyone who needs help to take part in the consultation, has a question, or needs paper copies of the consultation material should email gypsy.traveller@kent.gov.uk or call 03000 421 567.

Following the end of the consultation, the responses will be analysed, and a report will be produced, summarising the feedback. This will be used to help finalise the policy and the proposals will be presented to KCC’s Growth, Environment and Transport Cabinet Committee in May 2026 before any decisions are taken by the Cabinet Member.
