Dover Library to close for major refurbishment

Dover Library is set to temporarily close from Monday, 30 October, 2023 until December 2024 to enable major improvement works to the building.

Located within The Dover Discovery Centre, the library will be one of several services within the building to be rejuvenated via the project - which is being managed by KCC and DDC. The redevelopment of the Dover Discovery Centre has been a key consideration for Kent County Council (KCC) and Dover District Council (DDC) for several years.

Temporary library services and the registration of births and deaths will be offered at the nearby Dover Gateway alongside Gateway services from Monday 13th November 2023 while the improvement work is undertaken.

We are making every effort to ensure library customers, and those registering births and deaths, have excellent temporary service provision at the Dover Gateway while we work to make much needed improvements to the Discovery Centre as a whole.

Clair Bell KCC’s Cabinet Member for Community and Regulatory Services

KCC’s Cabinet Member for Community and Regulatory Services, Clair Bell, said: “I am pleased that our aspirations for Dover Library will start to become a reality soon.

“We are making every effort to ensure library customers, and those registering births and deaths, have excellent temporary service provision at the Dover Gateway while we work to make much needed improvements to the Discovery Centre as a whole.

“After extensive engagement with service users, we are confident that the redevelopment plans for Dover Library, and the wider services involved, will be well worth the wait.”

The Dover Gateway can be found at 69-71 Castle Street, CT16 1PD. Temporary library services will be available from Monday 13 November, and its opening hours will remain the same.

When the refurbished Dover Discovery Centre reopens in December next year, a range of services will join the library and registration service there, including Adult Education, Discovery Nursery, Dover District Council Archive and Education service, Integrated Children’s Services (ICS) and the Good Day Programme.
