The junction has suffered with heavy congestion for many years and is also a site that has seen a number of collisions.
The scheme, which is expected to cost about £2.2 million, proposes to:
- increase the queuing capacity at the traffic signals by widening both the south bound and north bound A229 Linton Hill approaches to three lanes. This will mean that there would be two straight ahead lanes on each approach with a long merge after the traffic signals.
- add an additional lane on Heath Road in both directions.
- add new push button-controlled crossing facilities at both Heath Road junctions and on the A229 Linton Hill (south of the junction).
- improve the existing crossing phase on the northern approach of Heath Road.
- move the bus stop on Heath Road (towards Coxheath) approximately 30m further west and the bus stop on the A229 Linton Hill (towards Maidstone) approximately 100m north. This is to accommodate the lane widening on these approaches.
- cut back the existing hedgerow and trees on the north-eastern side and south-western side of the A229 Linton Hill to accommodate the widening. These areas will need to be replanted upon completion of the works.
The consultation will open from Tuesday 13 June until Tuesday 25 July 2023. During this period, members of the public will be able to view the consultation material including a scheme plan online at www. and provide feedback via the online questionnaire. If a paper copy of the questionnaire is required, they can be sent out upon request using the email and telephone number below.
In addition to the above, we will be holding drop-in sessions where full A1 drawings to be displayed for viewing. A member of the design team will be available on hand to answer any design questions. These will be in Coxheath Village Hall, Stockett Lane, Maidstone, ME17 4PT on:
