KCC Leader's statement on Tunbridge Wells water supply disruption

The Leader of Kent County Council (KCC), Linden Kemkaran, said:

"I can confirm that Kent County Council (KCC) declared a Major Incident along with Tunbridge Wells Borough Council on Tuesday because of the ongoing dreadful situation in Tunbridge Wells.

"The water supply disruption has been impacting on large numbers of care homes, schools, families, businesses and key community services.

"It's simply unacceptable.

"KCC has been working relentlessly, with partners, to protect the local community and help keep Tunbridge Wells open for business during this crucial pre-Christmas period.

"We're really disappointed that lessons have not been learnt from previous water supply issues in this area of Kent.

"We continue to push South East Water for the highest level of assurance that people have their needs met and are kept safe.

"I understand that water is returning to homes over the next few days and we're monitoring their plan for restoring their supplies. In the meantime it's important people follow South East Water's safety instructions.

"We've:

  • Declared a major incident when families, schools, and businesses faced a fourth day without water
  • Pressed South East Water for urgent fixes and clear deadlines
  • Supported care homes with drinking water and hygiene advice
  • Pushed for schools to receive bottled water so pupils can keep learning
  • Held daily calls to hold South East Water to account and escalate issues when needed to the highest level
  • Worked with care providers to safeguard vulnerable residents and make sure they’re signed up for priority services

"Our priorities are clear: protecting people, supporting businesses, and demanding action.

"We won’t stop until South East Water has resolved this issue."
