A flag raising ceremony has taken place at County Hall in Maidstone to mark Armed Forces Day.

Led by the Chairman of Kent County Council (KCC), Gary Cooke, staff and Members joined veterans, and representatives of the Royal British Legion and the Military, to show their support and gratitude for the men and women in our armed forces, past and present.

Kent is home to three Regular Army bases with more than 1,500 service personnel. It is also home to around 900+ service children and just over 61,000 ex-service veterans and their families. There are seven Reserve Centres in the county, with over 500 Reservists and over 6,015 Cadets.

KCC is proud to be a Gold Ministry of Defence (MOD) Employers Recognition Award holder for its ongoing support of the county's Armed Forces community, including the many Reservists, Veterans and Cadet Adult Volunteers who work for and with the authority.

The men and women in our armed forces, who are prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice, have consistently risen to that challenge in magnificent fashion to keep Britain safe.

Gary Cooke Kent County Council Chairman

As the flag was raised above County Hall, Chairman Gary Cooke, addressed those gathered to give their thanks, saying “The defence of our country, its people and their interests is fundamental to our personal wellbeing and prosperity. So those who assume the responsibility of delivering it take on a vital and sometimes daunting challenge as they strive to keep Britain safe and free.

“The men and women in our armed forces, who are prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice, have consistently risen to that challenge in magnificent fashion to keep Britain safe, no matter the difficulties that they continue to face.  Regulars, Reservists and indeed their families, who bear so much on our behalf, and especially those in Kent, have more than earned the nation’s gratitude. We salute them all and their bravery, today. Well done and thank you!”
