Significant progress has been made in developing the scheme which has included getting permission from agencies such as the Environment Agency, the Marine Management Organisation, Crown Estate and port and navigation authorities.
Getting permission to press ahead with the improvement scheme is essential to ensure the project is delivered lawfully, safely and in a way that protects the river environment.
Subject to the outstanding permissions being obtained, it is hoped that the required licences will be in place to allow piling works to commence in May 2027. These works will reinforce the embankment and form the key element of the scheme needed to facilitate the reopening and improvement of the towpath.
In the meantime, preparatory activities will continue. This is expected to include accommodation works such as establishing the construction compound and storage areas for materials and equipment in readiness for the main works programme.

KCC’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Coastal Regeneration and Public Health, Jamie Henderson, said: “I appreciate how disappointing this delay to the start of on-site constructions works is to residents, elected Members and other stakeholders.
“The Environment Agency will not let us start works until the Sea Trout spawning season is over. It is vital that all the necessary approvals are secured before construction works begin on the Aylesford Towpath Improvement Scheme.
“The team leading this work remains committed to delivering the scheme and will continue to work closely with all relevant authorities to secure the necessary approvals as quickly as possible.”
