In just over two years, the school has completely turned around from a previous ‘requires improvement’ judgement.
Since joining in 2021, the headteacher, Kirsty White, took robust action to take the school on its improvement journey.
Ms White said: “We are incredibly proud of this amazing achievement. We have always worked for our children’s best interest with absolute integrity.
"Inclusion is at the heart of everything we do and this judgement demonstrates that our research driven approach is hugely impactful for all of our pupils both academically and holistically. It feels wonderful to have this publicly recognised.
"The positive impact we are having on children’s lives is something we feel both proud and privileged to achieve.
"We are courageous in our approach to ensure that every child and family feel welcomed at Westmeads. We make intentional decisions every day with our children at the centre of each one.”
At the recent inspection, Ofsted found that “everyone is welcomed into the strong ethos of kindness. Pupils develop self-confidence, and they truly thrive".
It also found leaders and governors have a shared vision that pupils will overcome barriers to learning, irrespective of any challenges they may face.
The report adds that the school's pursuit of excellence starts with what is best for the most vulnerable pupils and pupils with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND), and that the school has exceedingly high expectations for all.
Christine McInnes, Director of Education and SEND said: “I’m really pleased to see such an impressive turnaround at Westmeads.
“Their clear commitment to being an inclusive school brings huge benefits for pupils, helping them gain a sense of belonging, boosting their self-esteem and helping them develop empathy and respect for diversity, all of which is important for them as they grow up to lead independent, healthy and fulfilling lives."
