Pupils learn sun safety skills video transcript
Video transcript for the sun safety skills video on the Pupils at Platt Church of England Primary School learn sun safety skills with Kent charity the Melanoma Fund page.
[Children sitting on the floor in their school hall listening to an assembly]
Head teacher at Platt Primary School, Emma: The assembly went really well, the children really enjoyed it, particularly when the sunburns came in to get them. But it really brought the message home, I think, about the need for sun protection.
[The children are standing up in the assembly demonstrating how to apply suncream]
Emma: So they know to wear their hats but they're not always good with that, so I think now things like hats and sun cream are going to come into school a bit more and the children really learned about how to take that initiative themselves with looking at the weather, the UV levels, do I need my sun protection today? And they all really enjoyed themselves and could all talk afterwards about what they learned from that assembly.
[Children sitting on the floor in the assembly raising their hands and to answer a question they have been asked]
Michelle Baker, CEO the Melanoma Fund: “We're visiting 21 schools around the Kent and Medway area and making sure there's a completely wide demographic, providing a 20-minute assembly, making sure that children are aware of the risks and also that we've got some extension follow-on activity like taking part in the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code, quizzes, a sun safety poster competition and to become a sun monitor, which is really great.
[Children sat down in the school hall of the assembly laughing and trying to avoid people dressed in red suits who are pretending to be sunburn]
Michelle: Most children have experienced parents putting sunscreen on them and also not having the parent putting it on themselves and that sends a very subliminal but negative message around sun protection. So what we're here to do today is send a positive message saying that this is a superpower, this is a life skill and when learnt young, like brushing teeth and tying shoelaces, it's something that can be done throughout a child's life not even thinking about it. So we're making sure that children understand how to sun protect, why to sun protect, where, and when.
