Plans to encourage active and safer journeys across Sevenoaks town

People are being invited to share their views on proposals by Kent County Council (KCC) to encourage active and safer journeys by reducing the speed limit in Sevenoaks town.

If approved, the scheme would see a 20mph zone implemented across much of the town, as well as the introduction of traffic calming measures in Dartford Road.

KCC is proposing to reduce the existing speed limit to 20mph on major roads including A225 St Johns Hill, London Road up to its junction with Mount Harry Road, as well as the B2019 Seal Hollow Road, A225 Tonbridge Road 50m south of Finnes Way and Brittons Lane and Dartford Road.

It is also proposed that a zebra crossing and traffic calming measures are introduced to Dartford Road and The Vine. Traffic calming measures include a new southbound cycleway, new one-way southbound route on Dartford Road, alterations to turning movements from The Vine onto Dartford Road and a new footway build-out on The War Memorial site to improve pedestrian access.

We know that studies show one of the best ways to encourage more walking and cycling is to make sure people feel safer.

KCC’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, David Brazier said: "We know that studies show one of the best ways to encourage more walking and cycling is to make sure people feel safer."

"We know that studies show one of the best ways to encourage more walking and cycling is to make sure people feel safer. By introducing a town-wide 20mph zone  we can make it more attractive for people to ditch their car for local journeys, thereby making healthier, cheaper and more sustainable journeys while reducing traffic. In addition, slower speeds reduce the severity of injuries should an incident happen."

"We are keen to hear residents’ views on our proposals through our consultation, which has now opened, so we can learn and further develop the proposals."

The consultation opens today, 30 September, and closes on 10 November.
