To safely complete these works, a full road closure will be required. Pedestrian access across the bridge is expected to be maintained throughout.
Due to significant pressures on the regional road network – including several National Highways maintenance programmes on the A21 and other scheduled works in the area – the earliest suitable window that can accommodate a road closure of this length and scale is in 2027. Although the A21 activities are mostly carried out overnight, their frequency means there is not a sufficiently uninterrupted period to permit our three‑month programme any earlier.
Planning this work in advance allows KCC to minimise disruption, avoid clashes with other schemes, and maintain appropriate access arrangements for residents, businesses and emergency services. Where access relies on crossing the bridge, this will be via the pedestrian route or the agreed diversion.

“These works are vital to keeping the bridge safe and resilient for many years to come.”
Peter Osborne, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: "We understand how important Newenden Bridge is to the community, and we know that any closure can be challenging for those who rely on it every day. These works are vital to keeping the bridge safe and resilient for many years to come. By coordinating this programme well in advance, we’re able to reduce disruption and keep the local road network moving. We appreciate the community’s patience while this important maintenance is carried out and will continue to share clear information as we approach the start of the works."
