Kent County Council scoops up award for commitment to energy efficiency

Kent County Council (KCC), nominated by SAS Energy, has won the Regional Council or Local Authority Body of the Year award at the Energy Efficiency Awards for its commitment to promoting energy efficiency across the county.

The award celebrates the achievements of a council that has shown a true commitment to promoting energy efficiency within its region, considering the scale and scope of the work carried out.

Through innovative solar power projects and collaboration with renewable energy providers such as SAS Energy, the council has demonstrated that it is at the forefront of renewable energy initiatives, setting a benchmark for other local authorities in their efforts to combat climate change.

Among these projects is the council’s second solar farm at Kings Hill. Spanning 11.9 acres, this project generates three million kWh of renewable electricity annually—enough to power approximately 750 homes and offset over 621 tonnes of carbon emissions.

The judges were impressed by KCC’s ambition to achieve Net Zero by 2030. The council has installed solar systems at schools, community hubs, and council offices, reducing its own reliance on fossil fuels and contributing to a cleaner, greener future for Kent.

The judges also highlighted the support KCC has given to the local community to show residents that renewable energy is not just a goal but a reality. Through various energy efficiency initiatives, KCC is helping residents reduce both their energy consumption and costs. These initiatives include financial assistance, educational programmes, and collaborative projects designed to promote sustainable energy practices within the community.

We believe it is essential that KCC leads by example when working towards a greener Kent.
