The Grade II* listed Meopham Windmill, located on Meopham Green, is now fully operational for the first time in over 30 years following a major restoration.
Built around 1820 and known for its rare six-sided design, the windmill had fallen into disrepair. Today, after a £300,000 restoration, the mill has been fully reconstructed with new mechanisms, revitalised grounds, and its iconic sweeps turning once again - powered by the wind.
A celebration event marking the reopening of the fully restored windmill took place on 12 September 2025, bringing together those who made the restoration possible.

Over 500 visitors have already toured the windmill since its reopening, including school groups, scout troops, artists, photographers, and local clubs. The Trust is now planning further developments to enhance the site, including:
- a nature watch area with a bug hotel
- a micro-museum and small visitor centre
- seasonal events, charity fundraisers, and music performances
- flour production and collaborations with local businesses such as vineyards and cheesemakers
- potential use as a wedding and corporate event venue.

David Wimble, KCC Cabinet Member for the Kent Environment, said: "This project showcases what can be achieved when local passion meets professional expertise. Meopham Windmill is not just a building, it’s a living part of Kent’s history and I’m thrilled we have come together to revive this quintessential landmark."

Notes to editors
Kent County Council originally purchased the mill in 1959 as “owner of last resort” and has since preserved eight windmills across the county. The restoration of Meopham Windmill is a testament to the power of community, heritage conservation, and skilled craftsmanship—particularly the endangered craft of millwrighting, kept alive by Suffolk Millwrights and their apprentices.
