The grant received from the Active Travel England’s Capability Fund will be used by KCC and council partners across the county to increase the resource and expertise required to deliver Kent’s active travel plans.
The national investment amounts to £32.9million to create a national network of experts to work with communities, enhance high streets and produce routes which are walkable and cyclable.
KCC is engaging with the 12 districts and boroughs to help support their active travel ambitions via a number of different interventions including the development of Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPS), Network Mapping and Scheme Planning and Design.
Additional resource from the Capability Fund will also fund active travel public engagement, Member and officer training and data collection.

KCC’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, David Brazier, said: “I am really pleased that KCC has been successful in bidding for this Active Travel Capability Fund.
“The funding opportunity will enable us to work alongside the districts and boroughs with their active travel ambitions and closely with Active Travel England to meet the latest Government design standards.
“Walking and cycling is a great way to get fit, save money on car-usage and reduce your carbon footprint.
“Properly designed schemes, taking into account the views of residents, will help produce improvements with public support.”
