Parkwood Hall Academy opens new vocational centre with café, shop and salon

Parkwood Hall Vocational Centre

Parkwood Hall Co‑operative Academy has officially opened a new vocational centre to support pupils in gaining hands-on skills, work experience and independence.  The school in Swanley, which caters for children and young people with moderate to complex learning difficulties, has developed the centre to simulate real-life working environments, providing pupils with meaningful, hands-on experiences that support their long-term outcomes and aspirations.

The new centre, based in The Gatehouse - a beautiful building that welcomes visitors at the entrance to the school’s grand drive, includes a café, shop, hairdressing salon, nail bar and enterprise room. These spaces give pupils the chance to take part in practical, real‑life work experiences in an exciting and purposeful environment for learning. Pupils will also be selling items online on Vinted, learning how to manage orders through e‑commerce, alongside the shop selling clothes that have been donated by the community.

Kent County Council places a number of children at the school, and the KCC Cabinet Member for Education, Beverley Fordham, attended the opening, where she was able to see the new facilities first-hand. She was also able to speak with parents about the difference the centre will make for their children.

Speaking after her visit Beverley said:

“This is a fantastic addition to Parkwood Hall and a real asset for its pupils. The facilities here are excellent and provide such a valuable opportunity for young people to develop practical skills that will support them in the world of work.

“Initiatives like this are exactly what we want to see as part of Kent County Council’s ‘Pathways for All’ approach, helping young people explore different routes into employment and build confidence for their futures.”

It is hoped the centre will help young people build confidence, gain valuable skills and feel better prepared for life beyond school.
