Prize winning design used for Christmas card

A child's Christmas card design

The artistic efforts of one Kent primary school pupil have been recognised by using her design on a Kent County Council (KCC) Christmas card.

KCC’s Cabinet Member for Education and Skills ran a competition for the second year in a row to find the best card design by a primary school pupil.  The winning entry featured on Mr Love’s Christmas card that has been sent to key partners of the County Council, locally and nationally.

The design was created by Sophie, a Year 5 pupil from Minster in Sheppey Primary School, who is also the Arts Ambassador in her school’s ‘Minster Parliament.’

Recipients have included education partners across Kent, key personnel from partner agencies who have worked with KCC to transform special educational needs provision in the County over the last two years, as well as contacts further afield in local and national government.  A card has also been sent to both the Secretary of State for Education and the Prime Minister, to highlight the talents of Kent’s pupils.

The card also features the designs of the two runners-up on the back, and names all the schools which participated.

Mr Love said: “This is only the second year that we have run this competition, since I initiated it after being appointed as Cabinet Member for Education and Skills.

“I am delighted to report this year we had 114 entries, which were of such a high standard, that I nominated a second ‘Runner Up’ and introduced a ‘Highly Commended’ category. Pupils in all those categories received a certificate.

“It was a delight to meet Sophie and hear about her role as the Arts Ambassador.  She told me the stages of designing this card.  I very much hope this recognition will provide encouragement to all pupils to continue to practice, develop, and refine their art, and I hope it was a fruitful exercise for their schools.”

The ‘Runners Up’ were David, Year 6 from Ifield School, Gravesend, and Cade, Year 2 from Tenterden Primary Federation.
