Temporary closure of Ashford Household Waste Recycling Centre for essential works

Kent County Council (KCC) is advising residents that the Ashford Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) will be temporarily closed from Monday 9 February 2026 for up to 10 weeks to allow essential repair works to take place at the Ashford Transfer Station.

The works are required to ensure the site remains safe, operational and compliant with Environment Agency permits.

Following a recent ground condition survey, the results confirmed that the concrete floor of the Transfer Station has deteriorated and requires urgent replacement. If not repaired, there is an increased risk of vehicle damage and potential permit breaches.

A recent ground condition survey found that the concrete floor of the Transfer Station has significantly deteriorated and now needs to be replaced urgently.

The repair works will involve:

  • replacing approximately 1,400m² of concrete flooring
  • replacing the waste dividing walls.

Completing both elements together is the most efficient and cost-effective approach and will reduce overall disruption.

Alternative arrangements have been explored, but there are currently no suitable approved facilities that would allow operations to continue without temporarily closing the HWRC.

We understand that the temporary closure of Ashford HWRC will be inconvenient for residents, but these works are essential to keep the site safe and compliant.

Paul King, Cabinet Member for Environment, Coastal Regeneration and Special Projects, said: “We understand that the temporary closure of Ashford HWRC will be inconvenient for residents, but these works are essential to keep the site safe and compliant.

‘Please be assured that we have explored every option to minimise disruption and have combined multiple major repairs into one programme to reduce the overall length of impact. We thank residents for their patience while this vital work is completed.”

KCC recognises concerns about fly-tipping during periods of disruption, however, fly-tipping is a criminal activity carried out by illegal operators and experience shows that this occurs irrespective of the availability of Household Waste Recycling Centres.

During this period, the Transfer Station will operate under a partial closure, while the HWRC will be fully closed.

Residents are encouraged to use the following nearby HWRCs, which will remain open:

  • Canterbury Household Waste Recycling Centre
  • Tovil (Maidstone) Household Waste Recycling Centre
  • Folkestone Household Waste Recycling Centre
  • Dover Household Waste Recycling Centre
