Traffic management to be removed from the A249 as part of the Grovehurst Road Improvement Scheme

Overnight works will begin this evening to remove cones and barriers used to manage traffic on the A249 as part of the Grovehurst Road Improvement Scheme.

One lane of the A249 was closed in each direction from the Kingsferry Bridge roundabout to the Bobbing Roundabout to ensure crews could work safely on upgrading the new bridge.

Kent County Council’s (KCC) contractor will close the northbound A249 from 8pm Wednesday 18th December until 5am on Thursday 19th December to remove the barrier. The cones will remain in place until the barrier can be removed from the opposite southbound side, which will see the road closed again from 8pm on Thursday 19th December until 5am on Friday 20th December.

The road will then be fully reopened with two lanes in each direction. The traffic management will not be needed for the ongoing phases of the project, but occasional evening road closures will be required later in 2025.

Works to the slip roads and surrounding areas will continue as planned.

I want to thank local people and businesses for their patience...

Neil Baker KCC's Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport

KCC’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Neil Baker, said: “In the summer we committed to taking off the traffic management in time for Christmas.

“This good news comes as the team prepare to progress to the next phase of the works, which will ultimately mean more reliable journey times for people in and around the area.

“I want to thank local people and businesses for their patience while we have worked hard to deliver this scheme.”

Further information with full dates and times of the upcoming planned closures are available on the dedicated project website A249 Grovehurst Road and interchange junction - Kent County Council.
