These works are essential to gather information about existing ground and drainage conditions, which will inform the design of the A229 Blue Bell Hill Improvement Scheme.
For the safety of the teams carrying out the works, staggered lane closures will need to be in place at certain times in the area. A temporary speed limit of 40mph will also be in place on the A229 between Lord Lees and Cobtree roundabouts, but only while works are underway.
To reduce the impact on road users, the works have been carefully planned to minimise disruption where possible. This includes:
- survey teams operating at multiple locations simultaneously
- using extended working hours, including overnight operations, where necessary
- making use of existing lane closures from other projects and historical data will be used to limit additional traffic management.
Vegetation may need to be cleared to access survey sites. This will be kept to a minimum, and all activity will be carried out in consultation with an ecologist to protect local wildlife.

“These essential surveys are an important step in improving the A229 Blue Bell Hill for all road users.”
Peter Osborne, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: "These essential surveys are an important step in improving the A229 Blue Bell Hill for all road users. By gathering detailed information about the ground and drainage conditions, we can ensure that future upgrades are well-informed and deliver long-term benefits.
‘Teams have worked hard to plan these works in a way that minimises disruption, and I’d like to thank residents and motorists for their patience while we carry out this vital work."
