Views wanted on plans to enforce moving traffic offences in Tunbridge Wells

Kent County Council (KCC) is seeking views on the proposal to install moving traffic enforcement cameras on Mount Pleasant Road to prevent drivers from using bus priority in the area.

KCC and Tunbridge Wells Borough Council (TWBC) worked together to make improvements at this location. Since March 2023, cameras have been used to enforce the bus gates by TWBC. However, TWBC records show that unauthorised vehicles still regularly use the bus gates on Mount Pleasant Road.

It is believed that continued enforcement measures by KCC would improve the reliability of public transport and help preserve the safety of pedestrians in the area.

If the decision is taken to proceed with the enforcement, permits would be issued to some residents who have properties within the area and a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) would be issued to cars without a permit. The intention is for KCC to begin enforcement on 1 September 2025.

Unlike other moving traffic enforcement consultations, this site already has enforcement, but we need your views on whether this should be continued.

Notes to editors

Previously, offences such as driving through ‘no entry’ signs, banned turns, entering yellow box junctions when the exit is not clear, and driving vehicles on routes marked for buses and taxis only, could only be enforced by the police. Since July 2022, the government approved new powers for highway authorities outside of London to enforce moving traffic offences.
