Views wanted on plans to improve safety at St Dunstan’s Street (A290) and Station Road West, Canterbury

Kent County Council (KCC) is inviting residents, businesses and road users in Canterbury to share their views in a public consultation proposing improvements to St Dunstan’s Street (A290) and Station Road West.

It follows concerns about road safety at the junction, where six collisions have been recorded between 1 January 2022 and 29 September 2025.

Site observations show that many people walking on St Dunstan’s Street choose to cross Station Road West near the junction rather than use the zebra crossing further along Station Road West.

KCC is considering making two changes to improve safety:

  • On Station Road West – relocating the existing zebra crossing from near Pavilion Court to a new position closer to the junction with St Dunstan’s Street. This would provide a safe and convenient place to cross the road and people using Canterbury West Station would still be able to use the new crossing without having to walk any further.
  • On St Dunstan’s Street – removing the buff-coloured surfacing at the junction to make the white mini-roundabout more visible, improving awareness and road safety. The road markings at the junction would be refreshed.

Peter Osborne, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “This is a busy junction used every day by people walking, driving and accessing the station and the city centre. With several collisions recorded in recent years, it’s important that we look carefully at what more can be done to reduce risk and make the area safer for everyone.

If progressed, the works would take approximately two to three weeks to complete. To carry them out safely, traffic management measures may be required, such as localised road closures, temporary traffic lights or overnight working.

The consultation, which will run from 15 May to 25 June 2026, will give the community a chance to comment on the plans and help decide how to proceed with the scheme.

You can share your views on the proposed highway safety improvement scheme by completing the online questionnaire on the consultation webpage.

You can also view the Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) Public Notice for the proposed re-positioning of the double yellow lines (waiting restrictions) and respond to the statutory consultation.

If you have any questions on the proposed scheme, or would like a paper copy, please email east.highwayimprovements@kent.gov.uk or call 03000 41 81 81. When contacting us, please quote the reference ‘St Dunstan’s Street / Station Road West, Canterbury CRM’.

After the consultation closes, KCC will review all responses and produce a consultation report, summarising the feedback we receive.

The consultation feedback is expected to be presented to the Canterbury Joint Transportation Board (JTB). A final decision on how to proceed will be taken by the Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport.
