In an open letter KCC’s Leader, Roger Gough, called on Mayor Sadiq Khan to provide evidence which justifies him not including Kent motorists in the vehicle scrappage scheme.
The Leader also calls on the Mayor to share information explaining why the proposed ULEZ border does not broadly match the boundary of the Air Quality Management Areas in London.
Mr Gough also made clear that KCC would cease works on an agreement to install warning signage on its network, until those conversations take place.
“We must ensure motorists in Kent do not suffer by having a non-compliant vehicle and therefore risk needing to spend money they may not have during this cost of living crisis.”
KCC’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, David Brazier said: “Our proximity to the capital and the proposed expansion of the ULEZ boundary presents us with real challenges.
“We must ensure motorists in Kent do not suffer by having a non-compliant vehicle and therefore risk needing to spend money they may not have during this cost of living crisis.
“While we welcome the Mayor’s ambition to clean London’s air, as a council we have significant questions on where the ULEZ boundary sits and why that does not mirror the Air Quality Management Areas in London.
“I would urge the Mayor to take heed of our letter and come to the table where we can discuss proposals and how mitigating measures can be put in place to ease the burden on vulnerable people and groups in Kent.”
