A consultation has been launched seeking views on proposals for a scheme to improve a junction near Kings Hill.

The width of the junction at Kent Street and Malling Road has poor visibility for vehicles wishing to turn into and out of the A228 Malling Road.

KCC officers have worked with the Tonbridge and Malling Joint Transportation Board and local elected members to develop a scheme which proposes to install traffic signals at the junction on Kent Street and Malling Road, widen the carriageway along Malling Road from the junction at Kent Street to Beech Road and provide a push button pedestrian crossing facility on Malling Road near the junction of Kent Street.

Other key parts of the scheme include providing a new informal crossing point with tactile paving at Beech Road, providing a four metre wide shared cycle and footway on the western side of the Malling Road towards Kings Hill with a one metre wide safety buffer to separate passing traffic from pedestrians and cyclists and installing two new bus stops to the north of Kent Street – one on either side of Malling Road.

I would encourage people to review the plans and share their thoughts, so we can continue to develop the proposals.

David Brazier Kent County Council's Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport

KCC’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, David Brazier said: “Due to the width of the junction, any incidents in this area can cause a high level of disruption to the surrounding roads.

“If approved, this scheme would be part funded through developer contributions and contribute to biodiversity by planting hedgerow.

“I would encourage people to review the plans and share their thoughts, so we can continue to develop the proposals.”

Two public drop-in events have been planned by the team behind the proposals. They will take place at Mereworth Village Hall in Butchers Lane, Mereworth, between 1.30pm and 4.45pm on 19th June and between 6pm and 8pm on 21st June.

People can review the initial scheme proposals in the consultation document and have their say from today [Tuesday 23rd May] until 3rd July by visiting www.kent.gov.uk/kentstreet.
