Updated plans have been revealed by Kent County Council (KCC) for people to have their say on improvements to encourage more walking, wheeling and cycling.

A public consultation has opened to gather views on the latest proposals that would see changes in the B2175 High Street and The Hill in Northfleet, B2175 London Road and A226 Overcliffe and St James Avenue in Gravesend.

Improvements in the updated plans include new cycle paths, footpath widening, new crossings for pedestrians and cyclists as well as additional parking spaces and loading bay facilities.

We have listened to feedback received from two previous public consultations and have redesigned our scheme to relocate the proposed cycle route to the south side of the B2175; improve available parking for residents and businesses; add formal crossings and narrow the road to reduce speeds.

KCC’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Neil Baker, said: “In the right places improving walking and cycling facilities can have vast positive impacts on an area.

“Making it easier, safer and quicker for people to walk and wheel to where they need to be is something KCC is focused on with support from government funding.

“We have listened to the views shared in response to two previous public consultations and we are now ready to take the next steps in understanding how we can better support people to make smarter choices when deciding how to get about.”

Three public drop-in sessions have been planned by the team behind the proposals. They will take place at:

  • Gravesend Library between 12pm and 2pm on 10th October
  • St Botolph’s Church between 6pm and 8pm on 12th October
  • St Marks Church between 1pm and 3pm on 17th October.

The budget for the scheme is £600,000, will be entirely funded by the Department for Transport’s Active Travel Fund, which aims to improve walking and cycling facilities.

You can have your say by visiting www.kent.gov.uk/graveshamat before Sunday 5th November.
