Views wanted on draft Kent Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan

Kent County Council (KCC) is consulting on proposals for new and improved walking, wheeling and cycling routes as part of the county wide Kent Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (KCWIP).

The aims of the KCWIP are to develop a network plan to encourage more sustainable and healthy ways of getting about and to develop a prioritised programme of infrastructure improvements for future investment.

The Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIPs) concept has been developed by the Department for Transport. The government’s ambition is to make walking, wheeling and cycling the natural choices, both for shorter and longer journeys.

To fulfil our role as the Local Transport Authority, we have decided to develop the KCWIP so residents and stakeholders are clear about our priorities for improvements and to help us ensure each district plan forms a coherent county-wide plan for delivery.

Kent County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Neil Baker, said: “Our ambition is to make walking, wheeling and cycling a much easier choice for people when they are considering how to get around Kent.

“As part of this, we have looked at where the gaps are in our road, pavement and cycleway networks and have developed plans on how to improve these.

“We are now asking the public and interested parties to look at our proposals and provide comments by using the online mapping tool on the consultation page, or by completing the questionnaire.”

Three public drop-in sessions have been planned by the team behind the proposals. They will take place at Union Street Methodist Church in Maidstone between 2pm and 7pm on Wednesday 8th November; Cyclopark in Watling Street, Gravesend, between 2pm and 7pm on Monday 13th November and The Guildhall in St Peter’s Place, Canterbury, between 2pm and 7pm on Thursday 16th November.

You can have your say by visiting www.kent.gov.uk/KCWIP before Wednesday 10th January.
